If you haven’t been to the Earl Scruggs Center yet, you’re missing out! This museum is located in downtown Shelby and is housed in the beautiful 1907 Cleveland County Courthouse. The Earl Scruggs Center features interactive exhibits about the life and legacy of Earl Scruggs, a native of Shelby. Earl Scruggs was a banjo icon who helped shape bluegrass music with his innovative ‘Scruggs style’ playing, a revolutionary technique that is highlighted throughout the museum’s exhibits. The center celebrates our local music legend and the broader story of American roots music, with a special focus on the importance of bluegrass music in regional heritage. The interactive exhibits are genuinely fun—even Kate enjoys them, and that’s saying something for a museum.

Schiele Museum of Natural History — Gastonia (17 miles)
This one is worth the drive to Gastonia. The Schiele is a Smithsonian Affiliate with 77,000 square feet of exhibits including dinosaur fossils, live animals, gems and minerals, and Native American history. They also have a planetarium if you want to make a full day of it.

Rutherford County Farm Museum — Forest City (24 miles)
This TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice winner tells the agricultural and textile history of Rutherford County through hundreds of antique farm and home equipment items. Don’t miss the 200 feet of murals depicting cotton production and textile mills. Hours can be inconsistent, so call ahead.

Cleveland County Arts Council — Shelby
Right in uptown Shelby, the Arts Council has rotating exhibits and a gift gallery featuring local artists. But what I really love is that they offer classes for all ages—painting, photography, pottery, you name it. They also host great annual events like the Real to Reel Film Festival in July and the Carolina Pottery Festival.

KidSenses Children’s InterACTIVE Museum — Rutherfordton (21 miles)
This is a real gem for families with little ones! With 11,000 square feet of interactive exhibits designed for ages infant through 10, KidSenses has welcomed over 500,000 visitors since 2004. Kids love the 14 hands-on exhibits including a Little Family Dollar grocery store, Creation Station arts area, the ZAP Theatre with an actual Tesla Coil, and a TV news room where they can be on camera. There’s also a 7,500 square foot outdoor Children’s Garden (seasonal).

Carolina Arcade Museum — Forest City (24 miles)
This is one I’m excited to check out with Kate! Two floors packed with over 60 classic arcade and pinball machines—all on free play once you pay admission. We’re talking Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, and so many more from the golden age of arcades. They do an hourly rate or all-day pass, which is genius for families.

The Big E — Gaffney, SC (25 miles)
Okay, this one is technically in South Carolina, but it’s absolutely worth the trip if you want a one-stop entertainment spot. They’ve got 8 movie theaters, 16 bowling lanes, laser tag, an indoor playland, a 60-game arcade, and bumper cars—all under one roof. Plus outdoor mini golf and a ropes course when the weather’s nice.

The local shop owners actually know what they’re selling, and they’re not just trying to move inventory. I’ve found pieces there—local art, handmade goods, things you literally can’t get anywhere else—that I’m still happy with years later.

Step back in time at this authentic 1939 soda fountain! Featured on PBS North Carolina Weekend, Smith’s serves hand-dipped ice cream, classic milkshakes, cherry Cokes, and hand-patted hamburgers. The 50’s style decor makes it feel like you’ve traveled back in time. They also have a gift shop attached. This is the kind of place that creates memories.

A family-owned rink since 1998 with year-round roller skating. They have arcade games and host birthday parties. Homeschool families, take note: they have Homeschool Days the first Friday of each month from September to May (12pm-2pm, $5 + skate rental). They also do Adult Nights and Toddler Times.

George Pappas Liberty Lanes — Gastonia
A 32-lane locally owned bowling center with bumper bowling for the kids and cosmic bowling for a fun twist. Great for birthday parties or a family outing.
Autumn Lanes Bowling — Forest City (24 miles)
A family bowling center that’s been serving the community since 1995. They do cosmic bowling on Friday and Saturday nights after 7pm, and have arcade games, pool tables, party rooms, and food service. Note: they’re cash only, so hit the ATM first!

The Don Gibson Theatre is a historic venue in Shelby that hosts live music and performances, including country, bluegrass, tribute acts, and national touring artists. Named after country music legend Don Gibson—a Shelby native, renowned songwriter, and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee—the theater celebrates Shelby’s rich musical heritage. The Foundation Performing Arts Center — Spindale (22 miles)
This impressive 61,000 square foot facility at Isothermal Community College is a real cultural gem for our region. The Frank & Mabel West Auditorium seats 1,367 with a full proscenium stage. They host concerts, theater productions, and even NC Symphony performances. Recent acts have included Sam Bush, Keb’ Mo’, The Drifters, and Steve Earle. Definitely worth checking their schedule!
